Orbital rule 13 : Optic nerve meningioma

1-Meningioma arises from the covering(meninges) of the optic nerve while glioma arises from the structure of the nerve itself.
2-Meningioma accounts for 30% of the tumors arising from optic nerve, while gliomas account for about 50%.
3-For doing T1 with contrast in case of orbital lesion, you should do T1 fat suppression image before and after injection, remember that in T1 suppressed fat image the muscle is seen hyper intense while the fat is seen hypo intense.
4-Affects more common females between age of 30-50 years.
5-Radiological findings:
-Tubular enlargement of the optic nerve.
Any tumor arising from the optic nerve or its covering should grow along its direction.
-Homogenous enhancement with lucent track sign.
-Presence of calcification.
-Hyperostosis of the optic canal ( bone sclerosis ).
