Parapharyngeal space rule 2 :Summary of pathology

A)Lesions arising from the medial aspect of para pharyngeal fat are
-98% are carcinoma.
-80% is squamous cell carcinoma.
-Arising from nasopharynx, oropharynx or tonsils.
-The rest of the lesions are
N.H.lymphoma which can affect both children and adult.
Rhabdomyosarcoma which affects children.
and other types of carcinoma.
The only benign lesion which can be seen in this area is angiofibroma.

B)Lesions arising from the lateral aspect of para pharyngeal fat are
-Deep lobe parotid(mostly are of malignant types).
-Bony lesions arising from the mandible.

C)Antero-lateral aspect:
-Lesions arising from maxilla, mandible and muscles.

D)Posterior aspect:
-Lesions such as glomus, lymphadenopathy and neurofibroma.
